Symphony on Fire: A Story of Music and Spiritual Resistance During the Holocaust

In their own voices, Max Beker and Fania Durmashkin-Beker tell us their stories. As Jews and musicians in pre-World War II Vilna, the Jerusalem of Lithuania, they were part of a cultural cadre who studied, performed and created classical and Yiddish music in the city’s concert halls and coffee houses, private homes and hotels.

War destroyed their nurturing, loving families and came close to destroying them as well. Although Max and Fania took different paths navigating through the Nazi horror, music was their passport to survival and transcendence. As accomplished musicians, they shared their music with so many – the unfortunate inmates of the Vilna ghetto, concentration, labor and Nazi POW camps, and, finally, the St. Ottilien Displaced Persons Camp, where they first met in 1945. Here, they performed as members of a Jewish orchestra for the Nuremberg tribunal, for Ben Gurion and Golda Meir, and for DP camp inmates throughout Bavaria. Their reputation was such that Leonard Bernstein was told of the remarkable Jewish survivor orchestra who performed in their striped concentration camp uniforms, and he arranged to conduct them.

Sonia Pauline Beker, their daughter, also presents her early recollections of growing up with her parents in Brooklyn in the 1950s, a time of nostalgia and innocence when Americans were just emerging from the dark tunnel of the War into optimistic prosperity. But for Max, Fania and Sonia, life would always be touched by memory, by the longing to renew, and by their music.

Rabbi Raz Hartman

Biography of Rabbi Raz Hartman

Rabbi Raz Hartman received a Bachelor of Music from the University of Southern California. He then studied for six years at the Bat Ayin Yeshiva where he received rabbinic ordination, and now uses music to deepen his Torah teaching.

Rabbi Raz is a teacher at Yeshiva Simchat Shlomo
Rav Raz Hartman, born to Israeli parents, grew up in Southern California. He was attending U.S.C., majoring in Music Peformance, when he met Rav Natan Greenberg. That meeting eventually result in Raz's coming to the Bat Ayin Yeshiva, where he studied for six years and was given Semichah in 2003. He is married to Leah, and they live, with their three children, in Nachla'ot, Jerusalem, where Raz serves as Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshivat Simchah Shlomo, and founder of the v'Ani Tefillah minyan. He has also produced several albums of Jewish music. Raz has recently returned to Yeshivat Bat Ayin as a teacher, teaching Breslov Chassidut.

Reflecting on Bat Ayin, Raz says: Bat Ayin for me was a unique place - most of all in terms of not being alone in a spiritual process. The growth that I did there was a basis of a number of lasting spiritual relationships. Bat Ayin has given me koach as I have stepped out to the world where a dedication to fundamental spiritual growth is not necessarily the consciousness of the majority even of religious Jews. The open connection between the learning of Torah, the davvening and the pursuit of G-d and of spiritual growth is a combination so far unique in the Jewish world, and one that I continue to treasure.

Rabbi Yonah Schiller

Rabbi Yonah Schiller is the Jewish Learning Initiative Campus Rabbi at University of Florida. He and his wife, Allison, and a large group of students are stirring up the Jewish students through JLIC and "The Shpiel".

Email : ravyonah@ufhillel.org

Internet clips found on Rabbi Yonah :

What is JLIC and why does it have a seemingly mystical hold over prestigious athletic championships?

JLIC is a program, in coordination with Hillel: the Foundation for Jewish Student Life, to create an Orthodox environment on secular campuses. It is found at 13 major colleges nationwide. The program is dedicated to the enhancement of Orthodox communities on campus by promoting positive growth and identity among Jewish students through a variety of activities, including study of ancient texts and the holding of religious services. At the University of Florida campus in Gainesville, Rabbi Yonah and Allison Schiller run the program, with a large following of students.

The newest student publication, The Shpiel, was launched in fall 2006 by students from the University of Florida and Hillel Rabbi Yonah Schiller. With a daily blog and planned events, the goal of the newspaper is to also provide an access point for involvement and identification within the Jewish student community.

”We want people to speak what they are really feeling, not what they [think they] are supposed to feel,” says editor, Kimberly Gouz.
