AMADOU & MARIAM
w/ special guests

This blind couple from Mali who play guitar and sing, respectively, create the "fizziest afro-pop blues ever bottled." In 2003, renowned musician Manu Chao invited Amadou & Mariam to record with him, and the result is Dimanche a Bamako. The album has been a major breakthrough for the duo, reaching the top of the French album chart, earning a Gold certification, winning a Les Victoires de la Musique award (the French equivalent of a Grammy), winning the 2006 BBC Radio 3 Award for World Music and receiving album of the year by Time, National Public Radio, Washington Post, Rolling Stone, MOJO and Spin.

Effortlessly funky yet full of insanely catchy tunes and with the African core of Amadou’s stinging, snaking guitar lines and Mariam’s hypnotically soulful voice tweaked with touches of reggae, jazz, blues and rock, Dimanche a Bamako has been brought from the dense and vibrant undergrowth of the world music scene to achieve mass popular success in the mainstream. The Evening Standard dubbed Amadou and Mariam “Africa’s funkiest band” and The Observer called their music “the fizziest Afro-pop blues ever bottled” while Time Out simply declared they had made “THE world music album of the year.” If you go to only one world-music gig this year, this is the one to choose.
