Rabbi Shaul : Darfur

unconquered peoples...wow, what a night

From Rabbi Gavriel :

We are working with other Boulder communities to raise money for instruments for them.

This from our friend Shaul Judelman in Israel:

hey folks,

just a short vignette from another night in israel...

i just got back from an incredible rehearsal...

do you remember Acharit haYamim, the reggae group from around here? they are good friends of mine, we jam together here and there and today I got a call from one of them to come to bring some drums to a rehearsal to provide rhythm for a couple of concerts coming up we're gonna do with a group of Sudanese refugees living here in Israel...

We went out to tel aviv into the middle of the foreign worker section--they are streets that are not located in the sphere of "place," for every corner of the world is present there. It is purely a "Time"--the world in 2008... positively extraordinary experience walking down a street with foreign workers, foods and musics from every which corner of the world. and we slipped into a big open room with mattresses around the sides and about 20 smiling folks, joking around on an evening after work, handshakes and hugs and happy to see us and each other. We shlepped in our drums, guitars bass etc and got to it...

Throughout the night probably 50 or so more chevra came by and joined in as we were singing, drumming and dancing- switching between our songs and theirs. Not much of a rehearsal in terms of getting ready for next weeks show, but a heck of a good time.

I was talking with one brother afterwards whose been here for almost three years, and he told of what a joy it was to have this party tonight, singing and dancing "like we would in Darfur".A chance to play and be together and remember home...

"Many (of us) have no family left, and we are just with our friends for each other." The flashes of pain in his face in memories were thankfully punctuated by real smiles and a conversation of hope and sharing in gratefulness.

it was touching and joyous dancing and jamming together. I am honored and excited to be a part of these upcoming concerts and the exchange of peoples sharing in joy between our two peoples. Muslims and Jews we will be together. In the music we share in the power to lift us from the darkest of memories and bring to us the joy and smile of life, friends and the hope within the present moment...

I am hopeful about the real opportunity to go on the road together in such a positive context... any clues? connections? Several people asked me about getting them some drums so they can play and sing...

Does anyone have connections with a Darfur support group out there?

for now we've got a gig in Tel Aviv next thursday night at the Kul-Tura and then in Jerusalem the next week. We willl definitely be jammin on the streets too,....

hope to see you soon.
shaul david
